OVERVIEW

I thought it'd be nice to start with a Metricon home. I've admired their display homes for a long time and this one had a lot of small elements that are attractive but easily achieved by anyone. Plus I've recently spent a lot of time looking at chests of drawers and this place had one that I loved 😉.

Isn't the little arrangement of top of these drawers just adorable?
The colours throughout this house are mostly neutral, although a couple of the bedrooms tend towards the darker, moodier blacks and charcoals, which I really like right now. If you're wondering how to use these colours a walk though one of their homes is a good idea, although I can say now that if you're using it on the walls the trick seems to be not to use it on all four walls. Often I'm seeing it on two walls, which avoids too much contrast between one dark wall and three white ones, but still isn't so much that it overwhelms a room.
The house plan features a master suite at the rear of the house. Which is kind of nice as you don't get street noise that way. But does have the downside of being right next to the main living area, which would be a problem if you have a busy, noisy family.
But anyway, onto my favourite decor choices in this house.

CHARCOAL HERRINGBONE TILES

It's unfortunate that so many newer homes seem to have very generic tiles, with shades of brown being used as "feature tiles" in bathrooms. I get it, they're affordable and neutral/inoffensive when you want to resell. But these tiles are a great way to keep your neutral palette but add a little style. And they had them in the shower and as the kitchen back splash, which shows their versatility. I have to say though that as much as I liked them as a back splash, I found the grey tile a jarring colour choice in a kitchen with beige lower cabinets and dark brown upper cabinets. Maybe the upper cabinets were meant to be grey, but honestly, they looked brown. Perhaps that was just me.

THIS WALLPAPER

This is an extreme close up, but you can see this in the above photo behind the dresser too. It's quite subtle and understated, and brings a nice touch of colour and texture to the room without screaming "I'm wallpaper!". If it doesn't seem like much at first, let me tell you, it grows on you. And may I just say that display homes are great for wallpaper inspiration, especially because then you can get a feel for how it looks on a whole wall, not just a swatch. I'm sure I'll be sharing a lot more wallpapers 😄

THE VERTICAL GARDEN

This is quite a a striking vertical garden. The panels are staggered - kind of like a brick pattern - with some panels being mirrors and others mass plantings of the same plant. Mainly ferns. It's very effective to see them en masse. And the mirrors made the space seem much more open and roomy, which it definitely wasn't! So it'd be a great option for someone with limited space, such as a courtyard or patio. I have to apologise for the dodgy photo here though. Most of it ran up the side of the house so getting a good vantage point was hard. Plus it was super sunny so my little phone camera struggled. It's definitely one of the wow moments in this house though, and because it runs up the side of the house you can see it through the windows of the main kitchen/dining/living area so you get maximum enjoyment from it.

BLACK WIRE FRUIT BOWL

This gets a mention not so much because I think it's an amazing bowl, but because you can buy almost exactly the same thing from Kmart or the Reject Shop for less than $10! They had one with lemons on the dining table and one filled with wooden balls on the outdoor dining table. It's a good reminder that you don't always need to spend big bucks to get a designer look.

And those are my top picks from this display home. Do you think you'd like to use any of these in your home? Or if you've visited this display home yourself, what did you like the most about the decor?

Until next time!
